What is PG & VG?

What is PG & VG?

What is PG & what is VG?

PG or Propylene Glycol;

Propylene Glycol Molecular Structure

Propylene Glycol is an organic compound also known as Propane-1,2-diol.

It is a liquid that has a sweet taste but it is without colour & odour whilst being a viscous liquid. PG is water-soluble & is perceived as being non-toxic if ingested.

  • Should you be worried about vaping Propylene Glycol?

Some people are allergic to PG, however, it is "Generally Recognised as Safe" by the FDA (US Food & Drug Administration). PG is a humectant, something that is used to keep things moist. Because PG has anti-microbial / anti-fungal properties, it can be used as a preservative & is.  Some of the items you will find PG in include: Cleansers, fragrances, gels & shaving creams.

VG or Vegetable Glycerin;

Molecular Structure of Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable Glycerin is a clear liquid carbohydrate & more viscous than PG. It is odourless & produced from plant oils such as: Coconut, Palm & Soy. It is often used as a sweetener & can be produced from vegetable oil directly.

  • Should you be worried about vaping Vegetable Glycerin?

VG or Vegetable Glycerin is used in food industries, it has less calories than sugar & also absorbs moisture's from the air. You can find VG in all types of foods as it helps preserve products by keeping them moist & also reduces natural sugar levels in food due to being used as a sweetener. We cannot offer medical advice & this information on PG & VG is a guide only.

  • Find out & understand how PG & VG is used in the production of e-Liquids & how they make up the e-Liquid base mix.

The VG is basically the part that thickens the vapour & increases the plume of smoke you create. PG will dilute an e-liquid & create a harsher throat hit. PG e-liquids will be thinner & the more VG used makes e-liquid thicker in appearance.

The VG gives a smooth or lite throat hit & the PG gives a stronger throat hit. The VG gives a better plume of smoke but can make a liquid low in throat hit pleasure. Distilled or de-ionised water is an option to thin VG e-liquid if you don't like or want PG in your base mix.

The nicotine will also make a stronger throat hit the higher it is in strength. Therefore, it is possible to get a good throat hit from a 100% VG base mix but we do not advise adding more nicotine than you would normally use, just to achieve a better throat hit.

  • This is where the PG or water options can be used in small percentages to enhance a majority based VG e-liquid & offer a stronger throat hit.

Which eLiquid base mix should I use in my Electronic Cigarette? PG or VG?

If you are using a CE4 or CE5 eGo Vaping Kit or similar eCig starter kit, you may find that 100% VG mixes or high content VG mixes are too thick for your device. You may also find that the more VG you vape, the better the battery or device should be as certain batteries are variable voltage which helps to heat a thicker liquid.

Depending on what you prefer regarding a good plume of smoke vs a good throat hit, you should consider that a 100% VG eliquid base mix will clog up inexpensive or cheap eCigs, atomizers & clearomizers. If you are just starting out on your electronic smoking journey & have little preference to what your e-liquid base mix is, then you should consider a 50/50 mix of PG & VG. This will allow you to move up or down the scales of VG & PG whilst having a starting point to compare to.

"Dripping" is a term used by advanced vapers, put simply, they place drops of eliquid onto open coil atomizers then close the unit up to vape. This is unlike a tank that most people are getting used to that holds a certain quantity of eliquid. 100% VG mixes or 85%VG / 15% Distilled or De-ionised Water mixes are common for people to use when dripping or sub ohm vaping.
